Transcendence donates their TMG Records headquarters to be used as the “stop the FTAA” International Media Convergence Center.

Too many details to go into but the FTAA is meeting in Miami this week, 34 countries in all. Protestors and demonstrators from all over the world are flying, driving, hiking, and bussing in to converge on Miami to protest the meetings in a mass effort to stop this free trade agreement to go through. This will be the WTO/Seattle on overdrive as the thousands of protestors try to stop the leaders of the 34 countries from their planned meetings on Thursday and Friday. Ed met with a group known as the ‘stop the FTAA media alert coalition’ who were working out of a small cramped back office in the official convergence center for direct action. They are a compendium of different international groups such as the peoples united for peace and justice, the citizens trade council, public citizen, action for social and ecological justice, and many others from around the globe. Their job is to stay in constant contact with the world media to raise awareness of the cause and to alert the media on a minute by minute basis as to the goings on of the day to day events and demonstrations. They needed phones, Internet, and a large and clean space. The boys in Transcendence decided to donate the TMG Records HQ to the groups to use as the new Media Convergence Center for the week. Doyle Cannon, a member of the Center from Vermont told Ed, “We are here to make sure people understand what is really going on because the corporations’ spin is so strong that its hard for normal people out there to even know why NAFTA and other Free Trade agreements have been so bad for people. We can’t win in the street, because they have guns and tanks and smoke bombs. But we can win the argument because we just have to tell the truth. We are winning in the ideas arena because of how corrupt and debilitating free trade has been so far. We just have to continue to get the word out.”

Ed Hale to attend Peace March in Washington DC

Ed Hale of the band Ed Hale and the Transcendence just announced that he is going to attend the peace march against the war on Iraq in Washington, DC on Saturday October 26th. There are an expected 500,000 people to attend from all over the country and 250,000 to attend in San Francisco the same day. Due to a hectic work schedule, drummer Ricardo Mazzi will not be able to attend.

“Thinking of heading up to DC for this march against another war with Iraq. Expected to be over half a million show up Saturday. Bringing a guitar and a video camera and being part of it. when I think that we are about to do this and we are all just kind of hanging out living our lives “waiting to see what happens.” I feel kind of sick inside so I figured I will go and invite anyone who wants to come alongÜit will be more fun that way, if there’s two or three or more of us.

There is a bus leaving from Miami and almost every other city to go there with other people who feel the same way about this. info is below this is pretty cool. Too bad it’s over such a shitty situation. Email me or call me if you want to come bus leaves Friday and we’ll be back by Sunday.

Or if you are somewhere else and want to meet there, cool.

Let’s do it.” Ed

Ed Hale returns safely after being detained in Costa Rica due to terrorist attacks on United States

Ed Hale has returned safely home to America from Costa Rica where he was being detained until international flights were allowed into the United States after the recent terrorist attacks on September 11th, a date that will forever live in infamy in the hearts and minds of all Americans. Ed was in San Jose, Costa Rica studying Spanish and taking a break while the band awaited the release of their new album Rise and Shine. . 09/17/2001

Ed Hale detained in Costa Rica due to terrorist attacks on United States

Ed Hale, lead singer for the band Transcendence, is being detained in Costa Rica for an extended period of time due to the recent terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11th. Ed was staying at a language school in San Jose, Costa Rica to study the culture and to study Spanish while the band awaits the release of their new album recorded earlier this year. Now he is at the American Embassy in San Jose. As there are no international flights allowed into the United States, there is no word yet as to when he will be allowed to return. The day after the attacks Ed forwarded this via email:

“I am in shock as I am sure everyone there is as. I watched it happen live on television down here. And could not believe that it was really happening. I pray that everyone is safe, but I know that they are not. I have cried, hot burning tears shooting form my eyes. I have screamed and yelled and feel like vomiting. I never thought this would happen. I always dreaded it. Now all I can think of is getting home. I am at a school with a bunch of Europeans and a few Americans.

The attitude here in Costa Rica is very weird. They have no army, not even a police force, so this is very foreign to them. They are totally dependent on America for their security but they are so far removed from it that it does not seem real to them. The European students have a very “you got what was coming to you” attitude to me and the other Americans here. They refer to us as “the bullies of the world.” And at first I was so enraged all I wanted to do was violently attack anyone who said anything. It’s been very heated between us and the Europeans. Now I wonder, “when will we ever learn that we can’t just go around doing whatever we want to whatever country and not expect some sort of retaliation?” What are we going to do, just bomb anyone who gets in our way?

Now more than ever we need to rally together as a people and really make a conscious effort to create peace by any means necessary in a peaceful manner, not through war. So now here we sit in the American Embassy awaiting word on when we can come home. Some Americans were here as students; some were here on business; some were just here to fish. Now we are all in a semi-comatose state wondering how everyone is back home. New York manÞI can’t believe it. May some good come of it, I guess, is all I can say, if that is possible.

Love and peace to everyone.

2001 Florida Heroes Awards

Among the many events attended by members of the band, certainly one the most exciting was the Florida Heroes Awards, hosted by the National Academy of Arts and Sciences, NARAS. Ed Hale and bassist Howard ‘Stro’ Stroman, participated in the 2001 Heroes Awards at The Loews Hotel in Miami Beach on April 15th. Organized by the Recording Industry Association of America, best known for its annual Grammy awards, the event was exceptionally spectacular and entertaining. Among the Honorees were South Florida natives KC and the Sunshine Band and Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records.
