Free love is actually a hidden track on the Sleep With You album. It was never assigned its own track number but instead was covertly placed at the end of the song Little Tree after about five minutes of silence. Many fans still don’t even know the song exists, assuming that once they hit that silence after the last song on the album that the album was over. It has never been officially released on its own. Hence its inclusion on this compilation. Again as in many other examples on this collection, it is ironic that due to the fact that most people don’t even know the song is on the album, Free Love personifies the theme of the Sleep With you album perhaps more than any other song we recorded. (But I admit that one could easily say that about Junkie, or Vicodin, or Little Tree as well.) Lyrically and sonically the song Free Love almost perfectly conveys the true meaning of what that album was all about to me personally. One could say it is the foundation for the whole album thematically and yet it has been heard by a very small group of fans considering how important it was to that album. The idea was simple. Create something other-worldly that lifts the listener up and out into a special world that transcends the current mainstream viewpoint that we see life through today with all of its limits and rules and regulations and taboos and fears surrounding love, sex, and romance. “In the new age I can make love to you, and you can make love to her, and she can make love to him, and he can make love to me.†A foretelling of the world to come once we break free from our limiting ideas about what’s acceptable as loving, caring, adventurous beings.
Lyrics
In the new age
I can make love to you
And you can make love to her
And she can make love to him
And he can make love to her
And she can make love to me
And I can make love to him
