It's
official. The new Transcendence CD Sleep with You was released on
December 2nd, 2003. Sleep
with You has stirred up more
than its fair share of controversy since its release. Critics have made
mention of the CD’s
extreme departure from the bands more spiritually focused and cerebral
world-music 2002 release Rise and Shine.
Upcoming

The
good news is that the all powerful All Music Guide (AMG) gave the
new CD 4 out of
5 stars stating
emphatically that “this album rocks more than anything else out
there right now. Buy it!” Even though the reviewer earlier called
singer Ed Hale “a stoned-out, sex-crazed, liguistically-challenged
Rufus Wainright...” of course Ed is very proud of this barrage
of flattery... LOL.
Radio promoters the Planetary Group stated that they had not seen an
album this controversial since Eminem. Citing how many DJs at radio
absolutely
love the CD and cannot stop playing it —especailly the tracks Superhero
girl and Minnie Driver ,
while others actually refuse to even open the shrink wrap due to the
CDs cover art.
Most notably it seems is the cover, which TMG Records and the band
stand behind 110%, while many retail store owners refuse to display
it in their
stores. If you are having problems purchasing the new CD at your local
music store rest assured you can easily buy it online at Amazon.com, cdbaby.com,
or directly from the band's website, www.transcendence.com.
You can also purchase & download the entire album from the itunes music
store. (You can download a free copy of itunes –the
best jukebox software– from apple.com)
Sleep with You is a departure from last year’s Rise and Shine,
both musically and lyrically; the band contends that it was intentional
and
there is no reason why they should be expected to make the same
album twice. A recent review on Amazon.com sums it up quite nicely:

“The
guitar sound is so much heavier this time around, but still
retains much of the melodic sound Transcendence is known
for. The crazy amount of creativity in the guitar work alone
should keep most listeners happy for a LONG time. If you
are sick of the typical guitar sound that is so trendy right
now, Transcendence will blow your mind; and your ears if
you listen to it as loud as I am right now. I firmly believe
this album really needs to be listened to as loudly as possible
to really get the full rush I've come to expect from the
new album. Drum and bass intensity have also been turned
up drastically making the album absolutely roar! Now for
vocals, God damn, I want to know what the hell happened to
Ed Hale between R&S and SWY?! What ever it is, I'm not
going to complain. He is singing from a whole new place on
SWY, and volume for that matter.
He
now shifts from guttural emotional screams to falsetto that
leaves you nodding your head with a satisfied grin on your
face. You can
honestly feel that he is serving up his heart and soul for you to sink your
teeth into; the vocals are that raw and vulnerable at times. Ed's
vocals are so real, not some formulated processed sound. Absolutely nothing
is held back on this album-he is so raw and vulnerable. And the Transcendence
boys played like this could have been their last album ever.” |

Controversy
or not, the album has steadily been climbing up the modern rock charts,
up to #23 on the specialty show charts in the last two weeks of December.
Only seeming to benefit the CD on college radio also. The album is
still gaining momentum on over 300 college radio stations around
the country, climbing to the top spot of #1 on many stations’ add
lists over the last two months, fueled by the songs Superhero
Girl , I'm
not the only one ,
and the anthemic Junkie .
Currently the band is gearing up for a new tour in support of Sleep
with You through the South and North East, which should start in mid-March.
